Program Overview

The Sixteenth Street Community HealthCorps program is designed as an eleven-month commitment with new program cohorts starting their service year each September and exiting the program in the Spring. Members serve full-time in their position, completing 1700 hours over the course of the year.

Please Note: Depending on program enrollment, the Community HealthCorps program may allow for rolling enrollment after the program start date with a reduced time commitment for the service term. Please reach out to the Sixteenth Street Community HealthCorps Program Manager for more information. Their contact information is listed at the bottom of the page.

Program Positions

Based upon their interests and professional goals, members may choose a position in our two tracks, either as a Resource Navigator or as a Health Educator.

The Resource Navigator

Our Resource Navigator AmeriCorps members are placed in Sixteenth Street’s Social Services, Women’s Wellness and Women, Infants and Children departments. There, members screen patients for needs and provide resources or referrals, or schedule appointments based upon the feedback they receive. Members also work to expand the capacity of their department by designing and leading staff trainings, developing informational resources or guides, and other long-term projects that align with each member’s professional goals.

The Health Educator

Placed within our Department of Environmental Health and Community Wellness, our Health Educator AmeriCorps members lead or facilitate programming designed to empower and educate community members on how to help themselves and others live a happier, healthier life. Members promote improved personal and environmental health outcomes through education, conducting community outreach and research initiatives, highlighting local grassroots leaders, and creating marketing and informational materials for distribution throughout the neighborhoods surrounding our health centers. Members may also choose to take on long-term projects and initiatives that align with their professional goals.

The Community HealthCorps Experience

The Sixteenth Street Community HealthCorps strives to provide excellence in care both for those in the community it serves as well as for its cohort members. To ensure quality outcomes for all, the Community HealthCorps program provides its AmeriCorps members with high-quality trainings, professional development opportunities and other benefits and resources. By the end of their service term, members leave feeling confident and prepared for their next career step after AmeriCorps, whether it is college, a graduate program, medical or law school, or moving into a job in their chosen profession.

Through participation in the program, members can expect to:

  • Gain hands-on experience through direct service in their host department and through service-learning opportunities with the program cohort.
  • Develop their career through professional development activities & seminars, trainings, networking opportunities, and one-on-one coaching sessions with the manager of the program.
  • Leadership development through volunteer management opportunities, community events, cohort team-building exercises, trainings, and long-term projects.
