Sixteenth Street offers supportive, family-focused educational programs and services to patients and community members free of cost. Our goal is to empower parents and caregivers and give them the tools and resources they need to ensure the healthiest start possible for their children.

WIC

Sixteenth Street is home to the most highly utilized Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program location in the state of Wisconsin. WIC provides healthy supplemental foods, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, and referrals for other community and medical resources to qualifying pregnant and post-partum women and children up to age five. Additional services at our WIC site include:

  • Lead Screening/Testing — on the spot blood lead testing and analysis for children at risk of lead poisoning in conjunction with your WIC visit
  • Breastfeeding Peer Counseling — mom-to-mom support available outside of WIC office hours
  • Farmers Market Nutrition Program — access to fresh, locally grown produce from June through October

Participation in WIC in association with health outcomes like reduced risk of pre-term birth or low birth weight and decreased risk of iron deficiency anemia.

Parenting Resource Center

The Parenting Resource Center is located at our Chavez location. Our aim is to improve infant and child safety and help parents and caregivers develop strong and healthy relationships with their children. Our bilingual family educators are certified car seat technicians and are specially trained to provide support for:

  • Safe Child Passenger — learn how to properly choose, use and install an infant or child seat. Class attendees who are patients of Sixteenth Street can obtain a new, safe, car seat for a reduced cost.
  • Parenting Classes — a free 4-8 week series for parents and caregivers available to patients and community members based on the stage of the child. Learn one-on-one or with other parents about child development, communication, developing routines, healthy discipline, and/or parenting teens or co-parenting skills.
