Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers recently opened its first in-school clinics at St. Anthony School, America’s largest Catholic K-12 school.
By providing healthcare within the community and outside of clinic walls, SSCHC’s in-school clinics at St. Anthony break down common barriers to care. For example, parents who have trouble taking off work, no longer have to worry about making special arrangements to get their children care.
“Our vision at Sixteenth Street is to take care of the entire south side community, no matter where they are during the day,” said Julie Schuller, MD, executive vice president and vice president of clinical affairs for SSCHC. “By partnering with St. Anthony, we are able to make it possible for kids to receive high quality care where they spend 80 percent of their day―at school.”
SSCHC’s in-school clinics at St. Anthony also allow for better coordination of care between the treatment a child receives at school and the treatment the child receives from his or her primary care physician. The clinics are staffed with bilingual Sixteenth Street providers and support staff in a true team-based care setting.
“On-site daily you will find a Sixteenth Street nurse practitioner and medical assistant,” said Dr. Schuller. “Any needs that can’t be met at the in-school clinic are addressed at one of our main community health center locations, and further specialty needs are routed through our robust referral system.”
Services offered at SSCHC’s in-school clinics include evaluation of acute needs, well child visits, vaccine administration and sports physicals. The in-school clinics are open during regular school hours and are exclusive to St. Anthony students.
