More than just medical care - a space for fellowship, learning, and growing no matter your age.

Sixteenth Street has provided me with more than just medical care. It is my support system in many aspects of my life. I have been living with type 2 diabetes for the past 23 years and have been coming to Sixteenth Street for 20. Living in the neighborhood, I use to find it very difficult going to my previous doctor because he was very far away. One day I was handed a booklet to pick a new doctor, and I chose Dr. Bachhuber
at Sixteenth Street, and I have been a patient of his ever since then.
Although I have diabetes type 2, asthma, problems with my thyroid and arthritis, I can maintain a stable lifestyle thanks to my doctor, and educators like Eida and Julissa. I look forward to coming to the Diabetes Support Group every second Tuesday of the month. With the help of Eida, I can control my health and not let my diabetes control me. We learn about eating healthy and correctly, stress management, what we should do in case we have an emergency. We also learn exercises appropriate for our age that we can do at home as well, which has helped me maintain a stable, healthy weight even though I have thyroid problems. What I love most about the support group is the "compañerismo," the sense of fellowship among other patients. We not only talk about our diabetes, but we also talk about our life experiences, our life with our families, things we go through, we laugh and sometimes even cry, but we have an amazing time, and I look forward to attending every month.
I am so thankful for Sixteenth Street. I know I am living a healthy lifestyle thanks to their care and support. After my visit here, I always leave feeling motivated, and it is all thanks to all the caring doctors, educators, and medical assistants that treat me as if I was family.
