Dr. Emily Gebhardt

With Valentine’s Day just behind us, love is in the air and we want to ensure that our children are in safe, healthy, respectful relationships. Unfortunately, intimate partner violence can go unnoticed by parents and can be confusing to teens. Click here to learn more about signs that your child may be in an unhealthy relationship and what to do about it!
- Communication is hurtful, demeaning, or threatening. Problems are ignored and not discussed.
- Distrust: partner does not trust the other, demands to see texts or emails to justify trust
- Isolation; teen doesn’t spend as much time with friends or family, may need to get permission to do so from his/her partner. Partner may exhibit jealousy when teen spends time with others.
- Mistreatment: partner does not treat teen with respect, does not care about his/her physical, emotional, or spiritual well being; partner uses threats, intimidation, and/or insults.
- Denial that abusive actions are abuse: partner will place blame on the teen. The teen can feel like he/she deserved the inappropriate treatment because he/she did something wrong.
- Inequality: one partner has all the control and power in the relationship, does not ask for input when making decisions
- Dishonesty: partner/partners lie to each other, friends, family
