My Sixteenth Street Story | Jesus

“And mostly, I want to thank Sixteenth Street, the SAUP program and my amazing doctor, Dr. Dunn. Dr. Dunn not only referred me to Froedtert for hip surgery, but above all, she helped me believe there was hope for me.”

At the age of 7 or 8, I only had a little pain in my legs. I was still able to play with friends and go to school. Except when it was raining – the pain was worse. Then when I was about 15, the pain intensified and was there not only when it was raining, but all day every day. It was so hard to tolerate, there was a point when I wanted to end my life – but I was too afraid to do it.

My family took me to a doctor who was unable to help. The doctor told me I had severe arthritis. He didn’t have any medication for me to alleviate the pain. We were very poor, so it was impossible for my family to take me to the big city to see other doctors. So, they took me to a “curadero,” because we thought I could be bewitched. There I was given herbal tea – but it didn’t work. The pain continued to worsen, until one day the pain was gone. My hips were locked. I was unable to move or walk. With time I did learn to walk again, but only using my ankles and my knees.

About eight years ago I came to Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers. My doctor, Dr. Margaret Dunn, referred me to Froedtert Hospital for hip surgery through the surgery through the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership’s Specialty Access for Uninsured Patients (SAUP) program. After waiting for some time to be approved, I finally had the surgery about a month ago. I can already tell the difference – I’m able to stand up straight and walking is easier. When my doctor, Dr. Margie Dunn, saw me for the first time after my surgery she described it saying, “Jesus walked in for his post-operative visit and he stood so tall. The joy on his face and lightness in his step left us feeling grateful and delighted for Jesus.”

I want to thank many people for their support. But I want to specifically thank the Diabetes Support Group at the clinic, for encouraging me to NEVER give up and to take the risk of having the surgery. I also want to thank my beautiful sister for supporting me through everything. And mostly, I want to thank Sixteenth Street, the SAUP program and my amazing doctor, Dr. Dunn. Dr. Dunn not only referred me to Froedtert for hip surgery, but above all, she helped me believe there was hope for me.

Now I can walk. I am so happy. I can dream of a better future. I want to work, walk and ride a bicycle. I want to get married and have my own family. Thank you
