Prevention services are diverse and responsive to the needs of the community. We offer prevention counseling that assists sero-negative and sero –positive individuals identify their risk and educate about tools in reducing risk of HIV transmission. ‘Prevention for Positives’ sessions are available for patients already receiving treatment for HIV and seeking support around risk reduction. Individualized counseling is also available to prepare individuals for HIV testing, to learn about risk and harm reduction, safe sex and sexually transmitted disease prevention.
In addition to individual prevention work, our prevention department offers support and education groups for women at risk, transgender and gender non conforming community members and people living with HIV/AIDS.
Outreach efforts aim to mobilize community members to engage in HIV prevention through HIV education, access to HIV testing and risk reduction tool, early HIV detection and linkage to medical care and treatment. Outreach includes a wide variety of events, presentations and activities. Each activity is custom designed to meet the needs, educational level and language of the audience. We have found by combining prevention messages with social events we can reach a large number of people at one time. Some of the events we are involved in are listed below:
- National Testing Day
- National Awareness Days
- Latino Nights
- Bar Outreach
- Health Fair & Community Presentation
- Presentations for SSCHC Staff (Cultural Competency)
- Prevention for Families and Youth.
